The Roman Forum, also known by its Latin name Forum Romanum, is a rectangular forum surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum.
3
The Palatine is the most famous of Rome's seven hills. In Ancient Rome it was considered one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city and was the home of aristocrats and emperors. It was also believed to be the location of the Lupercal, the cave where Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf.
4
Step into ancient history at the Mamertine Prison, one of Rome’s most atmospheric and significant archaeological sites. Located near the Roman Forum, this underground prison once held notable figures such as Jugurtha, King of Numidia, and according to tradition, Saints Peter and Paul before their executions. With the included audioguide, explore the haunting dungeons where prisoners were kept in stark conditions, descend into the lower chamber via stone stairs, and view the Tullianum cistern that supplied water to the site. The narration brings to life the prison’s role in Rome’s judicial system, its ties to the early Christian faith, and its transformation into a place of pilgrimage. Visitors will also experience the small church built above the prison, San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, offering a spiritual and historical dimension to the visit.
